Couples Therapy Cologne & Marriage Counselling | Paartherapie in Köln auf Englisch

I’m glad you’re here.

Talking about what matters most in a relationship is often easier in the language you both feel at home in. I love working with international and intercultural couples.

Whether you’re dealing with simmering conflicts, a lack of communication, a breach of trust or a desire for greater closeness: As a couples therapist, I’ll support you at my practice in Cologne-Ehrenfeld in truly understanding and connecting with one another again. I work in an emotionally focused and non-dogmatic way. Together, we look at what lies beneath the arguments or the withdrawal – the hurt, the longing, the needs – and at how you can find your way back to each other. That’s how hurt can heal, new relationship skills can grow and you can actively shape your partnership.

Couples of every constellation and relationship model are welcome, married or not – whether you're in a crisis, after an affair, going through a separation, or simply want to shape your relationship more consciously.

I currently have openings.

For instance, I can help you with:

Communication & Closeness

Finding a common language, opening up to one another again, breaking free from the daily grind and feeling a sense of lightness

Conflict & Repair

Understanding your conflict dynamics, moving away from the pattern of attack and defence, and causing each other less hurt

Sharing of Work & Mental Load

Reaching fairer agreements for everyday life, making invisible burdens visible and rebalancing responsibilities

Affairs & Breaches of Trust

Understanding what has happened, without justifying it, and rebuilding security and trust step by step

Supporting your separation process

Clarifying whether your relationship has a viable future, or receiving guidance on the path to a fair, considerate seperation

Non-monogamy, open relationships & polyamory

Gently opening up your relationship, reflecting on existing non-monogamous relationship models and finding a personalised compass for your partnership/constellation

A safe space for Queer Couples

Offering a safe, non-discriminatory space to discuss your specific dynamics free from heteronormative role expectations and prejudices

And, fundamentally, I’ll support you in understanding your individual needs and desires, communicating them to one another and finding compromises.

Other issues are, of course, also welcome.

Below, I’ll outline the fundamentals of my work as well as the approaches we can use to work on these issues together.

“We felt really at ease with Judith right from the start, and she helped us out brilliantly and very quickly. We’d recommend her in a heartbeat!”

The foundations of my work with couples

Changing Perspectives

When two people come together, they always bring different backgrounds with them – different families of origin, experiences and inner ‘cultures’, even if both come from similar backgrounds.

An important part of my work involves helping you learn to understand one another from the perspective of their unique background – rather than projecting your own unfiltered viewpoint onto your partner.

Turning conflicts into opportunities

For me, conflicts are not necessarily a sign that something is going wrong in a relationship – they arise quite naturally when two different people come together. It only becomes dangerous when conflicts are constantly bottled up rather than discussed – this leads to alienation rather than closeness. It is equally damaging to a relationship when conflicts always escalate and are never addressed at their core.

Together, we’ll work out how you can navigate differences and conflicts in a way that enriches your relationship, rather than driving a wedge between you.

Learning new relationship skills

For me, maintaining a healthy relationship is not just a question of personality or compatibility, but also of skills that can be learnt:

  • Introspection: Knowing what I want, who I am, and what I need

  • Self-expression: Being able to communicate my perspective clearly and vulnerably

  • Self-regulation: Being able to recognise and calm my own emotional reactions, rather than being at their mercy during an argument

  • Validation: First accepting my partner’s feelings as they are, rather than immediately going into defence or counter-attack mode

  • Repair: Being able to reach out to one another again after a conflict, rather than remaining at a distance

Shaping responsibility consciously

Central themes of my work are responsibility and accountability:

Each of you is, first and foremost, responsible for yourselves – for your own feelings, needs and reactions. Nobody is responsible for making others happy.

At the same time, you can make a conscious decision to meet your partner’s needs, even if they occasionally conflict with your own – this is then a conscious choice, not an automatically expected reflex.

Actively nurturing your relationship

A relationship is like a garden: it needs tending so that what you wish for can grow there. Alongside working through conflicts, I therefore also focus on consciously redirecting your attention to the beautiful aspects of your relationship – how can you make your time together enjoyable, and in what ways would you like to show each other appreciation and love?

Relationship researchers Julie Schwartz Gottman and John Gottman place importance on the ratio of positive to negative interactions – and it is precisely this ratio that shifts over time for many couples. Positive interactions are often just little things: a brief touch, a sincere compliment, a moment of undivided attention.

You need to feel it to heal it.

Integrative & Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy

My training in Integrative Couples Therapy – accredited by the Hamburg Chamber of Psychotherapists and undertaken at the North German Couples Academy in Hamburg – means that I combine various tried-and-tested approaches rather than limiting myself to a single method. A key aspect of this is a focus on your emotions and needs.

Our behaviour is primarily determined by deep-seated feelings, which often occur unconsciously. The visible issues causing conflict, by contrast, frequently play only a superficial role. When dealing with conflict dynamics, we therefore dig a little deeper: what emotions and needs actually lie beneath what you are arguing about? Sharing these feelings and needs with one another and truly listening to each other is often the key to genuine connection.

Talk Therapy & Gestalt Therapy

I also incorporate Carl Rogers’ client-centred talk therapy and Gestalt therapy into my work with you. Both approaches help you to become aware, in the present moment, of what is happening between the two of you, rather than simply talking about problems in abstract terms. And they create a space in which you can both be open with one another, free from judgement.

Mindfulness & Self-Compassion

Mindfulness and self-compassion are also integral parts of my work. They help us to pause in heated moments, to recognise our own emotional reaction before it escalates out of control, and to treat both ourselves and the other person with greater kindness.

Objectives of Couples Therapy

  • Examine Harmful Patterns

We examine the destructive patterns in your conflict behavior and work on strategies to break and heal them.

  • Identify Triggers & Past Wounds

We identify triggers for past emotional wounds, making intense emotional reactions more understandable.

  • Articulate Needs & Wishes

You learn to express the needs, wishes, and desires hidden beneath your conflict behavior, fostering self-expression.

  • Enhance Connection

Together, we formulate tangible measures to strenghten both your emotional and physical connection.
